Bornstein Commissioned to chronicle a new iconic, historic celebration at Texas State Capitol.

The new two day Mexican Independence Day festivities, Austin's newest annual tradition.

It was an honor to assist Gloria Mata Pennington, Chair, "Fiesta de El Grito de Independencia Committee" to photograph and chronicle these historic, two-day,"Diez Y Seis Septiembre" celebrations.

Day One, September 14th, 2013.
The Emma S. Barrientos - Mexican American Cultural Center.
All Austin and the Mexican Community celebrated their pride in their mutual heritage at the City's iconic venue. As for the last six years the MACC proudly celebrated this  year's event with "Viva Mexico" cultural performance. 

Day two, September 15th, 2013.
Texas State Capitol.
This historic event was indeed quite an achievement. The Fiesta de Independencia Foundation, The Consul General of Mexico together with the State of Texas Mexican American Legislature Caucus were able to secure permission  to hold this annual event on the grounds of the State Capitol. 

Many of Texas' Federal, State, County and City's officials were on hand to help with the festivities.

Over 10,000 guests filled The Texas Capitol grounds in a family friendly atmosphere of camaraderie and pride.
Tejano and Mexican cultures were showcased during the evening celebrations.
The Grammy winning Mariachi Campanas de America group.

 
Mariachi Campanas de America's presenting an example of the prominent role the female vocalist has in traditional Mariachi music.

The highlight of the evening was the traditional reenactment of Hidalgo's famous "Grito de Independencia" given by The Honorable Rosalba Ojeda,  Consul General of Mexico in Austin

During a truly historic moment, The Consul General waves Mexico's flag on the steps of the Texas Capitol.
